Transform plastic junk into jewellery – or a high-rise greenhouse

A clip on the BBC News page has just alerted me to the fact that Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, had an exciting exhibition showing what can be done with waste plastic:
“Repair” constituted the focal point at this year's Ars Electronica Festival, September 2-11, 2010, chiefly held at Tabakfabrik Linz.
What grabbed my imagination most strongly was a few seconds of window farming. For more on this, go to

I am an ocean rower-turned eco campaigner, and from March to July 2012 I will be doing a human powered circumnavigation of Britain by kayak and bicycle to promote plastic bag free towns. There seems to be some real momentum building on the plastic bags issue in the run-up to the Olympics, so it seemed a good idea to capitalise on that and hopefully achieve some tangible results.

I am keen to work with existing PBF campaigns, offering to do whatever I can to help take their campaign to the next level. I appreciate that much good work has already been done by many local campaigns around the country, and also that different goals suit different communities - ban, fee, or voluntary participation - and far be it from me to barge in as a total outsider and tell people what to do.

Provisionally, I have a 3-phase approach:
a) preparation before the day: - organise event, approach local media, invite people to join in by boat or bicycle, start warming up local retailers
b) on the day: arrival by kayak/bicycle, gather signatures, hold evening event comprising film screening and presentation; generate enthusiasm and distribute plastic bag free toolkit
c) after the day: follow up with communities (possibly via the network of UK Wildlife Trusts) to do what I can to help progress the campaign, and (if wanted) connect them to other communities also seeking to reduce plastic bag usage to share hints, tips, expertise and experience.

But of course this is completely flexible, depending on the specific situation in each town.

So I am writing to ask if you would be interested in having me come to your town this year. If you would, please let me know.

It would also really help me if you could spare a few minutes to fill out this quick online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PlasticBagFreeTowns. This is for my use only, so I can find out a bit more about your campaign. I promise not to share the information with anybody else without your express permission.

I hope this offer will be of interest to you. I'd appreciate it if you could let me know, either way, so I can either include you or cross you off my tour route.

With best wishes for a happy, healthy, and less plasticky 2012.
